Frankfort Police Department Shares Information About Neighborhood Safety Programs

Special to Capital Living

The arrival of summer traditionally results in an increase in calls for police service.  Frankfort Police Chief Walter Wilhoite would like to remind citizens of the department’s available crime prevention and community service programs.

“The department’s goal is to enhance its partnership with citizens in order to create and maintain a sense of security,” Wilhoite said, “while at the same time improving the overall quality of life in Frankfort.”

That is why Frankfort Police want to increase the community’s public awareness of these programs and encourage more citizens to participate.

Neighborhood safety programs include:

  • The Neighborhood Watch program, a partnership between the police and the community to prevent crime, empower the citizens to work together to help reduce crime as well as watch for and report unusual activity around residences and businesses.
  • Home Security Surveys, which provide an examination of residences by police to further the goal of “target hardening” in order to reduce opportunistic crime and lessen the chance of the home owner becoming a victim.
  • The Vacation Watch program, which has been established to increase the security of residential areas while homeowners are away for a week or more.

In addition, the Frankfort Police Department offers or sponsors the following services:

  • Crime Stoppers, which offers cash rewards for anonymous information leading to an arrest for a Frankfort/Franklin County crime.
  • The Police Explorer Program, which provides insight into the law enforcement profession for youth ages 14-21.
  • DARE, an educational program to help youth resist drugs and alcohol.

Frankfort Police are also available to provide informational community service programs and/or brochures for the following:

  • Personal Safety
  • Traffic and Bicycle Safety
  • Impaired driving
  • Proper child car seat usage and installation
  • Vehicle theft prevention
  • Burglary prevention
  • Medication disposal
  • School Safety

Frankfort Police also offer a Citizens’ Police Academy for those who are interested in attending a free, 12-week class to gain an overview and understanding of police procedures and investigative techniques.

For more information about any of these programs or public services, call Chief Wilhoite or Major Fred Deaton at 502.875.8523 or email them at mwilhoite@frankfort.ky.gov or fdeaton@frankfort.ky.gov.
